In my last blog, I talked about the function of the Gallbladder, what causes gallstones and how to diagnose if you have gallstones. I understand most doctors would usually advice patients to get a Cholecystectomy – surgical removal of the gallbladder- to eliminate pain associated with having gallbladder stones. The thought behind this is that once the gallbladder is removed, the liver overtakes and the bile moves directly from liver via the common bile duct to the small intestines. However, not having a gallbladder leads to serious problems of constant diarrhea.
Also, according to Traditional Chinese Medicine, the Gallbladder is part of the Liver network and hence is the yin organ of the Liver. Both organs works together, are co-dependent on each other and cannot function properly if one of the two has any problems. The gallbladder is the Yin organ and the Liver the Yan organ. Metaphorically, the gallbladder imparts the power of decision, the liver the power of action. The purity of the bile assures pure and proper judgment, clarity of vision, thought and decision making.Hence the Gallbladder is like the lens of the eyes through which we perceive our existent and anticipated , and inner and outer reality. Not having the gallbladder would mean deterioration of the Liver Network which could mean like having a veil obstructing our vision and thought. Without a gallbladder , we may be hence experience Cataracts, Glaucoma, and overall diminishing vision.
I am sure by now, you understand why removing the gallbladder unless the situation is really serious and you have no choice is not such a great idea. There are ways that you can actually break down the gallstones and eliminate it from the body naturally. One such method requires the patient to consume concentrated lime juice – say a couple of glasses – the night before. The acid from the lime juice breaks the gallstones and eliminates it from the body. Also in order to eliminate new stones from forming, squeezing a lemon in the mouth after eating a fatty meal, helps to break the fat down and aids in digestion. Regular upper torso lateral movements such yoga twist and turns, flexion and extension helps to squeeze the gallbladder and facilitates pushing the gallstones out of the gallbladder.
In order to prevent new stones from forming, it is imperative that one much have a high-fiber, low-fat, low-cholesterol diet rich in vitamins C and E. It is important to eliminate all bad fatty foods such a french fries , ice-creams, burgers and pizzas. The following listed herbs also help:
- Dandelion and milk thistle help stimulate bile production- Have it in a tea or eat it steamed or raw.
- Oregon grape enhances blood flow to liver and increases bile production. More effective in decreasing gallbladder inflammation when mixed with chamomile, marshmallow, and slippery elm.
- Rosemary stimulates bile production, eliminated any spasms that might occur in the bile duct, aids in fat digestion.
- Concentrated Mint Oil capsules can, if taken for several months, help break down small gallstones.
- Wild Yam is another herb that increases bile flow and lessens the pain of gallstones.
Each of the following alternative and complimentary treatment have their own specific treatment for this problem. I suggest you give it a try. At least, it is better than having your gallbladder surgically removed.
- Acupressure
- Chiropractic
- Hydrotherapy
- Reflexology
- Homeopathy
