Back Pain affects 80% of the adult population at some point in their lives. Back pain is estimated to affect 540 million people around the world. It is the 4th leading cause of disability in India. Chronic back pain sufferers are estimated to spend 7% of their life with disability associated with back pain. This translates into a loss of working hours and loss of wages for these individuals. 20% of young people in the age group of 16 – 34 years have been found to be afflicted by this problem, whereas 45% of people in the age group of 40 – 55 have been found to be suffering from this problem. These statistics show that back pain is no longer associated with increasing age and is affecting the young population as well. This can be attributed largely to an inactive sedentary life. Other Risk factors for Back Pain include Age, sedentary life style, poor posture, lack of exercise, improper lifting, pregnancy, weight gain, genetic, occupational risk factors, mental health factors like anxiety and depression.
Hence, it is important to work on eliminating or reducing the risk factors wherever possible, to reduce the re-occurrence of back pain.
