The National Wellness Institute, USA has adopted the following definition of Wellness. “ Wellness is a process of becoming aware of making choices toward a more successful existence.” Wellness Coaching is the application of the principles and processes of professional life coaching to the goals of lifestyle improvement for higher levels of wellness. It is an alliance between a professional wellness coach and a person (or persons) who, through the benefit of that relationship, seeks lasting, lifestyle behavioral changes. Health Coaching focuses predominately on the physical dimension of ones life. Health and Wellness Coaching touches all other dimensions as well such as emotional, spiritual, social, love, health & wellbeing, personal growth and development, fun & recreation and career. If one area of our life is in imbalance, it affects all other aspects of ones life.
How many times have you, your loved one set a goal for themselves and not achieved it. We all need an ally in the process of change. To change lifestyle behavior or behaviors it takes an average of 60-90 days. A coach helps you to create a personalized wellness program that you can cultivate as a habit or lifestyle for the rest of your life.
Before the onset of a disease, we first see signs of illness, then experience symptoms, followed by disability or disease and then death. Coaching reverses this process. A coach first helps you bring awareness to areas of your life that need improvement, then educates you and uses coaching tools that invoke a process of growth and eventually that leads to overall wellness.
Just like the people who push athletes to greatness in sports, life and wellness coaches push their clients to find success and satisfaction at their goal. According to the International Coach Federation (ICF), they develop their clients’ overall strengths and abilities. Unlike a nutritionist or physical therapist, who makes specific diet and exercise suggestions, a wellness coach will help you make better general choices that fit your lifestyle.
How Do I Work With a Coach?
First, you’ll sit down with your life coach or wellness coach over the phone or in person. The sessions will range from 15 minutes to an hour. During that time you’ll talk about what you want to accomplish.
Through the questions your coach asks, together you’ll define your goals and the challenges that could stand in your way. Then you’ll outline the steps you’ll need to take to achieve those goals.
You’ll have homework assignments — things to think about or do between coaching sessions to work toward your goals. You might need to write in a journal or create “action plans” of things you want to accomplish.
Your life coach or wellness coach will offer support and guidance along the way. And your coach will hold you accountable for achieving your goals.
You’ll work with your coach for a period of a few months or longer. The time frame depends on how often you meet and what you’re hoping to accomplish.
